2023-01-28 06:26 PM by BVB–  3m read

Leverkusen we meet again! It's the start of the season's 2nd half, and we're on. the road at the BayArena this Sunday. After two close wins, Terzic and the boys will be looking to establish more dominant performances and continue the winning streak for a chance to put pressure on the table leaders. Leverkusen themselves have gone through a revamp under the new leadership of Xabi Alonso. It will be a tough but exciting match!

Edin Terzic mentioned this in the pre-game presser:

"Counterattacks are a big weapon for Leverkusen, they have a lot of pace on offense. They also concede few goals and are flexible in their build-up play. We have to organize ourselves well when it comes to the rest of the defense."

Marco Reus and Jude Bellingham will be back in the squad for Sunday. Thomas Meunier is on his way to recovery and so is Mateu Morey.

👊 Table Positions:

BVB is 6th in the league table after the 2 wins to start the year. A win would put the club in a good position to get back in the top 4 depending on the outcome of the Frankfurt game this weekend. Bayer Leverkusen, on the other hand, are on a 5-game winning streak pulling them from 17th to 9th since Xabi Alonso's takeover. They will hope to keep their streak intact.

📊 Head to Head:

Matches against Leverkusen have usually leaned Dortmund's. In 10 matches showing 7 BVB wins and 3 losses though as of late matches have become really intense and showered with goals (avg. 4 goals/game). At the beginning of the year though, we narrowly won at home with a weird goal that saw Adeyemi's shot brought past the goal line by Marco Reus to seal the action on the scoresheet.

👀 Fun Facts:

  • The last game that ended in a draw against Leverkusen was on the 2nd of December 2017 (1-1) with BVB's goal being scored by Andriy Yarmolenko.
  • There have been 2 games so far where both teams picked up red cards. The first time was in 2011 on a 0-0 draw, Mario Götze and Michal Kadlec got 2 yellow cards resulting in their expulsions at minutes 77' and 64' respectively. The second time was in 2013, Leverkusen won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Heung-min Son. Sokratis picked up a 2nd yellow in the 90th minute while Emir Spahić got a straight red.
